The DAC Difference

Not another lecture series — a working route map of proceedings

Most courses teach the law of arbitration. DAC's courses teach the practice of it. Because the faculty are experienced arbitrators and Hon'ble retired Judges who preside over real references, the teaching follows the actual life of a proceeding: how a reference begins, how a tribunal enters upon it, how hearings are actually conducted, where parties and counsel commonly go wrong, and how a lawful, enforceable award is written. Participants observe live arbitration proceedings, work on drafting exercises, and leave with the working habits of institutional practice — not just its theory.

Practice Wisdom

The dos and don'ts of proceedings — taught from the chair

Every batch devotes dedicated sessions to the errors that experienced arbitrators see repeated in proceedings — and how to avoid them. Illustratively:

The Dos

  • Invoke arbitration by a proper notice and preserve proof of service at every stage.
  • Insist on written Section 12 disclosures before the tribunal enters upon the reference.
  • Plead every claim with its foundation in documents; prove what you plead.
  • Maintain a clean, continuous record of proceedings — it is the award's armour.
  • Address interest, costs and counter-claims specifically, and seek a reasoned award on each.

The Don'ts

  • Never proceed on a unilateral appointment — it is void and infects the entire award.
  • Do not proceed ex parte without recorded, repeated opportunity to the absent party.
  • Do not travel beyond the pleadings or award what was never claimed.
  • Do not leave any claim, defence or objection undecided in the award.
  • Never ignore limitation, jurisdiction or arbitrability — decide them, on record, first.

Who Should Attend

Built for working professionals

The part-time weekend format is designed for those who cannot pause their practice or employment to study:

Legal Practitioners Corporate Counsel Business Leaders & Entrepreneurs Chartered Accountants & Professionals Engineers & Technical Experts Government Officials Law Students Aspiring Arbitrators & Mediators
After the Course

A one-month internship — inside live arbitrations

The classroom is only half the training. On completion of the course, candidates are offered a one-month internship at the Centre, where they are assigned with arbitrators in real-life cases — attending proceedings, watching pleadings tested and evidence recorded, and seeing how a reference actually moves from hearing to award. It is the actual feel of the process in live arbitration matters, under the confidentiality of Section 42A and the directions of the Tribunal concerned, that turns a certificate-holder into a practitioner. The internship carries its own certificate from DAC on successful completion.
